Kuta Lombok Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know About the Town

Kuta Lombok is not Kuta Bali. The name confuses first-timers who arrive expecting a party strip and find instead a small, dusty surf town with beautiful beaches, a few good restaurants, a handful of excellent surf shops, and a pace of life that adjusts your internal clock within 48 hours.

For a comprehensive overview of why Kuta Lombok has become one of Indonesia’s most sought-after surf and travel destinations, read our article Kuta Lombok Surf Destination: A Hidden Gem in Indonesia before planning the specifics of your visit.

Getting There

Lombok International Airport (LOP) is 25 to 30 minutes from Kuta by car. Arrange a transfer through your accommodation. DHM can connect guests with trusted drivers for approximately 150,000 to 200.000 IDR for the journey. Avoid unsolicited taxi touts outside the airport.

From Bali by fast boat: arrive at Teluk Nare or Bangsal harbour on Lombok’s northwest coast, then arrange onward transfer to Kuta Lombok (approximately 4500,000 to 500.000 IDR by private car). The full breakdown of every transport option from Bali to Lombok is covered in our article Planning a Surf Camp: Why Bali to Lombok Should Be on Your List.

Where to Eat in Kuta Lombok

Warungs: The Local Staple

Kuta’s warung scene is excellent and affordable. A full meal costs 30,000 to 60,000 IDR (under 4 USD). Our guide to Good Food Spots in Kuta Lombok covers the best warungs, cafes, and restaurants near the surf camp with honest recommendations for every meal of the day.

Restaurants for a More Substantial Meal

Kuta’s restaurant scene has grown significantly. Wood-fired pizza, seafood grills, smoothie bowls, and international menus are all available within 10 minutes’ walk of most camps. Seafood grilled to order from local fishing boats is a specific Kuta experience worth seeking.

Beaches Near Kuta Lombok

Tanjung Aan (20 minutes west)

A wide, stunning double-bay with two distinct sand types. Swimming is safe in the protected sections. One of Lombok’s most photographed beaches. Busy on weekends with Indonesian domestic tourists and quiet on weekday mornings.

Selong Belanak (25 minutes west)

The best beginner surf beach in Lombok also happens to be one of the most beautiful: a kilometre-long arc of white sand framed by hills, with a Sasak fishing village at the western end. A recommended rest-day visit even if you are not surfing. Our full surf guide to Surfing in Lombok: Easy Guide to Waves, Seasons, and Stays covers Selong Belanak alongside all the other accessible spots from Kuta.

Mawun Beach (15 minutes west)

A small, enclosed bay with calm, clear water and a beach that remains largely free of vendors or infrastructure. Good for swimming, snorkelling, and a quiet afternoon.

Things to Do Beyond Surfing

  • Waterfall hike to Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls (90 minutes from Kuta, accessible by arranged transport).
  • Rinjani volcano trekking: the 3,726m Gunung Rinjani is accessible on multi-day treks from the northern coast.

Bau Nyale Festival (February or March depending on moon calendar): the traditional Sasak fishing festival in Kuta town. A massive cultural spectacle worth timing a visit around.

  • Moto GP at Mandalika Circuit: the international motorcycle racing event (typically October) transforms Kuta for one weekend.

Practical Information

  • Money: ATM in Kuta town centre. Bring cash for warungs and local transport. Card accepted in most surf shops and restaurants.
  • Mobile data: Indonesian SIM cards available at Lombok Airport and in Kuta. Data is fast and cheap.
  • Scooter hire: Available throughout Kuta for approximately 60,000 to 80,000 IDR per day.
  • Safety: Kuta Lombok is generally safe. Do not leave valuables visible and use accommodation safes.
