Lombok Surf Season Guide: The Best Time to Visit for Every Skill Level

The most common question after where should I stay is when should I come. The answer for Lombok is more nuanced than for most surf destinations, because unlike many places where the surf has one obvious peak season, Lombok delivers quality waves year-round. This guide breaks down every month so you can plan around your skill level, your schedule, and what kind of surf experience you are actually looking for.

The Basics: Lombok’s Two Seasons

Dry Season: May to October

The dry season brings the dominant southwest swell, powerful and consistent groundswell generated by storms in the southern Indian Ocean. This is Lombok’s classic peak surf season. Swell size averages 3 to 6 feet, occasionally 8 to 10 feet or more at expert breaks. For a full picture of all the spots that fire during this season, see our Lombok Surf Spots guide, which maps every major break on the south coast.

Wet Season: November to April

The wet season brings tropical rainfall, often in intense short bursts rather than sustained grey drizzle. Swell shifts from southwest to northwest or west, which means south-facing breaks lose their power but sheltered spots like Selong Belanak, Inside Gerupuk, Ekas Inside, and Tanjung Aan come into their own.

For beginners, the wet season is actually ideal. Smaller, gentler swell, fewer crowds, lower accommodation prices, and the rain typically clears within an hour. Our easy guide to surfing in Lombok covering waves, seasons, and stays gives a helpful overview of how to plan a trip in either season.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January

Swell is small to medium, mostly northwest. Wind is variable with some onshore afternoon wind. Crowds are very low and prices are at low season rates. January is the deep wet season. Sheltered spots like Ekas Inside and Selong Belanak are the go-to. For beginners, January is one of the most relaxed months to learn because waves are forgiving, coaches have more time per student, and accommodation costs are at their lowest.

February

Northwest swell continues with occasional southwest pulse starting to build. Crowds remain low.

Bau Nyale Festival typically falls in February or March, a massive Sasak cultural event in Kuta Lombok. The town fills with Indonesian visitors rather than international tourists, surf conditions remain quiet, and the cultural experience is unlike anything else in Indonesia. Read the full story behind this extraordinary event in our article, The Legend Behind the Bau Nyale Festival.

March

Still some northwest swell but the first southwest swells of the season start arriving. Wind is mixed and crowds begin building. March is a transition month and a great time for intermediates because you get the best of both worlds: manageable conditions at beginner spots plus the first pumping sessions at Gerupuk Outside.

April

Southwest swell is establishing with 3 to 5 feet at most spots. Wind is turning offshore and crowds are at moderate levels building upward. April is a genuine sweet spot: swell has arrived, conditions are clean, lineups have not reached peak-season density. DHM has noted April as one of the best months for their guests because the camp is not overwhelmed and coaching quality is highest when ratios are lower.

May

Consistent 4 to 6 foot southwest swell. Wind is offshore in mornings and variable in afternoons. Crowds are growing but manageable. May is when Lombok’s surf season hits its stride. Morning sessions are world-class with glassy conditions, consistent sets, and uncrowded lineups. Afternoons can get choppy when sea breezes kick in, so plan to surf mornings.

June

Swell reaches 4 to 8 feet on reliable and powerful southwest groundswell. Wind is strong offshore trades and crowds enter high season. June begins Lombok’s peak high season. Gerupuk’s outside breaks are firing. Advance booking at DHM is essential for June.

Moto GP note: the event at the Pertamina Mandalika circuit near Kuta Lombok draws enormous crowds to the area. If your dates coincide, book accommodation months in advance. Our Kuta Lombok travel guide covers all the major events on the local calendar alongside beach, restaurant, and logistics information.

July

Peak season swell of 5 to 8 feet, occasionally 10 feet or more. Wind is strong offshore and crowds are at maximum. July is the month that serious surfers plan their Lombok trip around. For everyone else, lineups are at their busiest and accommodation books out. Book everything months in advance.

August

Similar to July in terms of wave quality and crowd levels. School holidays in many countries drive traveller volumes. For solo travellers or couples looking for a social surf camp experience, August is fun because the camps are full, evening conversations are lively, and the energy is high.

September

September is arguably the best month for the optimal combination of quality and crowd levels. Swell is still strong and consistent, but Northern Hemisphere holiday season has ended and lineups thin out noticeably. For a deeper look at which specific breaks to target in September, our detailed article Surfing in Lombok: Top Spots Suited to Beginners, Intermediates, and Pros covers each break and the swell conditions that make it work.

October

Swell is transitioning to 2 to 4 feet. Wind is shifting and crowds are low. Spots like Selong Belanak and Inside Gerupuk remain consistent and good for beginners and intermediates. The Moto GP event typically falls in late October and transforms Kuta Lombok for one weekend.

November

Northwest swell pattern is establishing with 2 to 4 feet at sheltered spots. Wind is variable and crowds are very low with the lowest prices of the year. This is the quietest month of the year, a real advantage for nervous beginners who want personalised coaching without waiting.

December

Northwest swell continues with holiday crowd building around Christmas and New Year. Before Christmas it is similar to November: quiet and gentle. Christmas to New Year sees Indonesian domestic travellers fill Kuta Lombok and prices jump for one week.

Quick Summary: Best Month by Surf Level

  • Absolute Beginners: January, February, November for maximum coaching time and lowest prices. April and May for the best balance of conditions and availability.
  • Intermediate Surfers: March, April, May, September. These shoulder months deliver real progression waves without overwhelming crowds.
  • Advanced and Expert Surfers: June, July, August. Book accommodation months in advance.
  • Surf and Culture: February for Bau Nyale Festival. October for Moto GP.
  • Best Value: November through March. Low season pricing, quality coaching, uncrowded waves.
