Surf Spots Lombok: A Complete Guide for Every Skill Level

Ask a surfer who’s been to both, and Lombok tends to come up as the one people wish they’d found sooner. Warm water all year, waves running from soft sandy beach breaks to some of the heaviest reef passes anywhere in Indonesia- this is what makes Lombok surf spots stand out from the rest of Indonesia’s coastline.

You’ll also spend less time paddling around someone else to catch your wave. Anyone who’s dealt with a packed Bali lineup knows what that’s actually worth.

Technically, Lombok belongs to West Nusa Tenggara, a short hop across the strait from Bali. It doesn’t feel like Bali’s neighbor once you’re actually there. Sasak culture runs through the coast, the pace is slower, and there’s a lot less concrete.

DHM Surf Camp takes guests out most days, so this is the practical version: which spot matches your level, when the season actually favors you, and what you’re genuinely getting into before you paddle out.

What Makes Lombok Different From Bali?

A strait, not much more than that physically, separates the two islands. Everything about the surf scene on Lombok’s side feels different once you’re in the water.

Stormrider Surf Guides, an independent reference most surfers trust, puts it bluntly: Lombok’s south coast matches Bali’s Bukit Peninsula for wave quality, minus the crowd and the resort sprawl, according to their regional overview of Lombok.

What actually sets it apart:

  • Lineups that stay manageable, even at the well-known breaks
  • A coastline that hasn’t been paved over with resorts yet
  • Surf towns that still move at their own pace
  • Most of the best spots clustered along the south coast near Kuta Lombok

Best Surf Spots in Lombok by Skill Level

Not every wave here works for every surfer, and Lombok makes you pay for guessing wrong more than most places in Indonesia do.

Where Should Beginners Surf in Lombok?

Selong Belanak, no contest. Long, sandy, no reef waiting underneath to punish a wobbly first attempt at standing up.

Works year-round, best on a high tide. If you’re ready to try reef, Gerupuk Inside is the natural next step: easy takeoff, a long ride; just expect company from the local surf schools.

Where Should Advanced Surfers Head?

Every experienced surfer already knows the name Desert Point. One of the best left-hand waves on the planet by most rankings, with barrels that can run twenty seconds under the right swell.

The reef underneath is genuinely shallow, and it does not forgive mistakes. Want something serious without the three-hour drive out there? Mawi and Gerupuk Outside deliver real power much closer to Kuta.

When Is the Best Time to Surf in Lombok?

Lombok surfs well throughout the year, part of what makes it such a reliable destination.

  • Dry season (April to October): the most consistent swell and predictable offshore wind, favoring the west and southwest-facing breaks
  • Wet season (November to March): slightly smaller waves, shifting toward south and east-facing spots, still surfable most weeks

Swell itself forms far out at sea from sustained wind over open ocean. That energy can travel thousands of kilometers before reaching a coastline like Lombok’s, according to NOAA’s explanation of how ocean swells form.

Tides and Why They Matter at Each Break

Get the tide wrong here, and it’s not just a lesser session; it can genuinely turn dangerous depending on the break.

  • Selong Belanak: works best at high tide
  • Seger Beach and Mawi: prefer mid to high tide, both sit over sharp, shallow reef exposed as the water drops
  • Air Guling and Desert Point: actually need lower tides to reveal their shape

That’s the whole case for a local guide, honestly, especially on reef breaks where there’s not much room to get it wrong.

Getting to Lombok’s Surf Spots

Most of what’s worth surfing sits within a 30-minute drive of Kuta Lombok, easy enough by car or scooter.

  • Gerupuk’s breaks require a short boat ride from the fishing village harbor
  • Ekas and Desert Point sit further out, typically needing a boat transfer or a longer drive

A surf camp near Kuta Lombok takes most of this off your plate: transport, tide timing, and the local knowledge you’d otherwise have to figure out the hard way.

FAQs

What are the best surf spots in Lombok for beginners?

Selong Belanak, hands down, with Gerupuk Inside as a solid next step. Gentle, forgiving waves that won’t punish a shaky first attempt at standing up.

Is Lombok good for surfing compared to Bali?

Genuinely, yes. The wave quality holds up against Bali’s south coast, minus the crowd fighting you for the same set.

What is the most famous surf spot in Lombok?

Desert Point. One of the best left-hand barrels anywhere on earth, though it’s really only a wave for advanced and professional surfers.

When is the best time of year to surf in Lombok?

April through October, that’s the reliable window for swell and wind. Off-season still delivers though; something’s nearly always breaking somewhere on the island.

Do I need a guide to surf in Lombok?

Worth it, especially anywhere reefs are involved: Mawi, Desert Point, Gerupuk Outside. Knowing the tide and how to actually get there changes more than just how good your session is.

Can beginners and advanced surfers stay at the same surf camp in Lombok?

Absolutely, Ekas proves it on its own, a mellow inside break sitting right next to a serious outside one, easy enough to match each guest to whichever fits.

Ready to Surf Lombok?

A stretch of coastline like this is genuinely rare, the full range of world-class waves packed into a fairly small piece of Lombok’s south coast.

At DHM Surf Camp, each day gets built around getting you to the right break at the right tide, first wave at Selong Belanak or a real session out at Desert Point, whichever you’re actually ready for.

Best surf camp Lombok! I had an amazing week at DHM surf camp in Kuta Lombok. This is not just a Lombok surf school. It's a real surf family with professional coaches, great vibes and clean accommodation - this is the place! The team knows all the best Lombok surf spots and they take you every day to the best conditions depending on your level. I improved so much in just a few days. Amazing team, so warm and welcoming. Food was so good and so fresh. Rooms were lovely. Surf coaches were super. Also really great to be situated just beyond the craziness of the main strip in town.

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉
