Surfcamp Costa Rica: What to Expect (And Why Lombok Might Beat It)

Costa Rica shows up on nearly every surfer’s list eventually. Warm water, jungle backdrops, a country that’s basically built its entire tourism identity around Pura Vida and good waves. If you’re researching a surf camp in Costa Rica for your next trip, this covers what you’re actually signing up for, the main towns, what each one suits, and why a growing number of surfers are quietly looking at Lombok instead.

I run DHM Surf Camp on Lombok’s south coast, so there’s an obvious angle here; no pretending otherwise. Still, before anyone books a flight, the comparison’s worth making honestly, starting with what Costa Rica actually gets right.

What Makes Costa Rica a Popular Surf Camp Destination?

Water temperature does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The Pacific coast sits at a tropical 26°C to 29°C year-round, no wetsuit needed, just boardshorts and enough sunscreen. Add a surf culture with decades to mature into what it is now, and the appeal isn’t hard to see.

Three towns really run the show in Costa Rica’s surf camp scene, and each pulls a different crowd for a different reason.

Tamarindo Surf Camp: The Beginner-Friendly Hub

Most first-timers land in Tamarindo, and there’s a reason for that. It has the most developed surf school infrastructure in the country, a bay offering peaks for every skill level, and the shortest transfer from Liberia airport of the three main towns.

What you’d expect from the most popular option is exactly what you get. Crowds. A main strip that leans touristy. Lineups packed tight once peak season hits.

Nosara Surf Camp: Wellness Meets Consistency

Nosara, Playa Guiones specifically, has earned its reputation as the surf-and-yoga town over time. Arguably the most consistent wave in the country sits here, forgiving enough for a beginner, still got enough to it for an intermediate chasing a longer ride.

Quieter than Tamarindo, calmer once evening hits, and it costs more too. Accommodation runs higher-end here compared to either of the other two towns.

Santa Teresa Surf Camp: The Off-Grid Alternative

Further south on the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa trades polish for atmosphere. Power over gentleness in the wave itself, better suited to intermediates than someone picking up a board for the first time, and the town leans rustic, more jungle than resort.

It takes longer to reach than Tamarindo or Nosara, and that’s precisely the draw for surfers staying two weeks or longer, or anyone working remote who wants a slower rhythm running alongside the surf.

Costa Rica Surf Camp Comparison at a Glance

Town Best For Wave Style Trade-off
Tamarindo

First-timers, variety

Gentle to moderate, all levels Crowded, touristy

Nosara

Wellness-focused surfers Consistent, beginner to intermediate Higher cost

Santa Teresa

Intermediate surfers, longer stays Powerful beach breaks Longer travel, less polished

What a Typical Costa Rica Surf Camp Package Includes

Daily lessons, shared or private rooms, meals built from local ingredients- that’s the standard bundle most packages include. A yoga component often comes along too, particularly in Nosara and Santa Teresa, where surf-and-yoga has basically become the house style.

Airport transfers are where it gets inconsistent; some camps fold the Liberia pickup into the price, others bill it separately, worth actually reading the fine print rather than assuming either way.

What Costa Rica gets right, genuinely, comes down to fundamentals: real instruction, water that’s reliably warm, and infrastructure that’s had decades to iron out the logistics that worry most first-time travelers. That counts for something, and it’s a real part of why the country keeps showing up on every surf trip shortlist going.

Why Lombok Is Worth Comparing Before You Book

Here’s where the comparison actually gets interesting. Lombok offers water just as warm, waves that independent surf guides rate on par with Bali’s best breaks, and a fraction of the crowds you’ll actually deal with in Tamarindo during peak season.

Costa Rica’s surf towns have had years to build out infrastructure, and that shows up in convenience, easy transfers, familiar comforts, and well-worn tourist trails. But it also shows up in crowded lineups and climbing prices, especially in Nosara.

Lombok’s south coast still feels early in that curve by comparison. Selong Belanak rivals Tamarindo for beginner-friendly conditions without the crowd fighting you for the same set. Desert Point stands with any world-class wave Costa Rica has to offer, and arguably outclasses most of them.

Flight time is the honest trade-off, worth naming plainly. Costa Rica is a more direct hop for surfers based in North America.

Lombok asks for a longer journey from most of the world, no getting around that. But for travelers already eyeing Southeast Asia, or anyone willing to fly a bit further for meaningfully less crowded water, it’s a genuinely competitive alternative rather than some consolation prize.

What DHM Surf Camp Offers as an Alternative

At DHM, we build each stay around matching guests to the right break for their actual level, not a one-size-fits-all lesson plan handed to everyone regardless of experience.

Beginners get Selong Belanak’s forgiving sandy beach break. Intermediate and advanced surfers get access to Gerupuk, Mawi, and, when conditions and ability genuinely line up, Desert Point itself.

Packages include daily coaching, accommodation, and the kind of local tide and swell knowledge that matters most on reef breaks specifically, exactly the guidance a first-time visitor to Lombok genuinely needs and can’t easily piece together alone.

It’s the same fundamental promise Costa Rica camps make: real instruction and real local knowledge, just applied to a coastline that’s still relatively under the radar.

FAQs

Is Costa Rica or Lombok better for a first surf trip?

Both work well for beginners, Tamarindo and Selong Belanak in particular. Costa Rica offers easier logistics for North American travelers, while Lombok offers comparable wave quality with far fewer crowds.

What’s the best Costa Rica surf camp for beginners?

Tamarindo usually tops that list: gentle waves, forgiving conditions, more surf schools packed into one town than anywhere else in the country. Nosara comes in second for anyone wanting the same beginner-friendly setup with a calmer, more wellness-leaning vibe.

How much does a surf camp in Costa Rica typically cost compared to Lombok?

More, generally, Nosara especially. That gap mostly reflects Costa Rica’s more built-out tourism infrastructure and the higher cost of living along that coast compared to Lombok’s south side.

Do I need surf experience before booking a surf camp?

Not at all. Both destinations run programs built specifically for total beginners: Tamarindo and Nosara on the Costa Rica side, Selong Belanak and Gerupuk Inside on Lombok’s, so picking up a board for the first time is exactly what either place is built for.

Can advanced surfers find serious waves at either destination?

Absolutely. Santa Teresa and Nosara offer real challenge in Costa Rica, while Lombok’s Desert Point and Gerupuk Outside rank among the more demanding reef breaks anywhere in the world.

Final Words

Costa Rica earns its reputation honestly: reliable infrastructure, warm water, and three distinct towns covering every kind of surfer. But it isn’t the only place worth considering. Lombok offers a comparable range of waves, arguably better quality at the top end, with noticeably less competition for the same wave.

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉

This place is unbelievable. I came here as a Aussie on my own for a seven day stay and it really did exceed expectations on every level. All of the staff are great, always A great vibe and so happy to help. Afvila Is amazing and very friendly she helped me learn some Indonesian and took care of everything for me from day one. My surf Coach was Khay, He helped me improve so much over the trip. He takes his job very seriously and make sure to get you on plenty of waves with some form of instruction after every wave. super happy with his coaching and my progression over the course of my stay. Special mention to Pian He’s just the greatest vibe. He put me onto a few really good waves as well And never failed to have a smile on his face, absolute superstar. You’d be doing very well to get either of these guys as your coach. They are super knowledgeable and passionate about helping you to improve. My room was cleaned immaculately every single day. There’s always someone around Should you need anything and The food is exceptional. they really do cater to anything that you need. This is no ordinary hotel I will definitely be Back and recommend to all of my friends and family. Thank you very much to the whole team at DHM. I already can’t wait for my next trip.
