Family Surfing in Lombok: The Complete Guide for Parents and Kids

A family surf holiday in Lombok is significantly more achievable than most parents assume. The same qualities that make Lombok ideal for adult beginners (sandy-bottom beginner beaches, uncrowded lineups, patient coaching) translate directly to exceptional experiences for families with children. Selong Belanak’s gentle waves, Gerupuk’s Kids Point, and DHM’s flexible coaching model can accommodate children from around 7 years old through their teenagers and parents of any age simultaneously.

For a dedicated guide to every family-friendly beach and activity in and around Kuta Lombok, including things to do for non-surfing family members, see our article Family-Friendly Lombok Surf Spots and Things to Do Nearby.

Best Surf Spots for Families in Lombok

Selong Belanak: The Family Flagship

Selong Belanak is essentially a family-designed beach. The wide, sandy bay with a gently sloping seafloor and forgiving slow-roll waves eliminates the primary fear factors of surf learning for children: no sharp reef, no powerful shore break, no significant current risk in the main surf zone. Children from approximately 7 to 8 years old can be coached here with immediate success.

The beach itself supports non-surfing family members well. Wide, flat sand, clean water for swimming, and warung cafes visible from the water mean parents can monitor children from the beach if only one parent is surfing.

Kids Point (Gerupuk): The Named Option

Gerupuk Bay includes a break explicitly called Kids Point: a very gentle, shallow-water reform that produces the smallest, most manageable waves in the bay. It is accessible by jukung boat, which adds a child-friendly adventure element. The boat trip across the bay and the gentle wave faces combine to produce genuinely memorable first surf experiences for children.

Age and Ability Considerations

Ages 7 to 10

Younger children in the 7 to 10 range benefit most from very short sessions (45 to 60 minutes maximum) on extremely gentle whitewater at Selong Belanak. The goal is fun and basic balance, not formal technique. A long, wide foam board provides maximum stability. Short sessions prevent the frustration and exhaustion that can put young children off surfing permanently.

Ages 11 to 15

Tweens and young teens often surprise their parents with how quickly they progress. Natural flexibility, low centre of gravity, and motivation can produce rapid improvement. DHM coaches adapt to teenage learning dynamics: treating older teens with the same technical rigour as adults and younger teens with more patience and playfulness.

Parents and Children Learning Together

DHM’s 1-on-2 coaching model occasionally accommodates a parent and child learning together under one coach. This works well for a parent-child pair at similar levels, or where a parent wants to learn alongside a child in a supervised environment. Request this specifically during the initial briefing.

Health and Medical

Ensure all family members are currently on routine vaccinations. Bring a basic first aid kit including antiseptic for any minor reef cuts or scrapes, even though the surf camp provides basic first aid kit. The nearest hospital to Kuta Lombok is in Praya (approximately 30 minutes). Kuta has a clinic for minor issues. Travel health insurance covering children and water sports is essential.

Non-Surfing Family Members

Lombok has abundant activities for family members not surfing. Tanjung Aan beach (20 minutes from Kuta) has calm lagoon water safe for non-surfing swimming. Mawun beach is similarly calm and enclosed. For a full rundown of things to do in and around Kuta, see our Kuta Lombok Surf Destination: A Hidden Gem in Indonesia guide.

Practical Family Surf Safety Tips

  • Apply high-SPF waterproof sunscreen to children before sessions. Equatorial sun burns faster than any context children will have encountered previously.
  • Rashguards are mandatory for children in Lombok surf sessions.
  • Always confirm with the coach that your child’s wave selection will be appropriate for their exact level. Err toward easier rather than more challenging initially.
  • Children dehydrate quickly in tropical conditions. Ensure they drink water before, during boat time, and after sessions.
  • Children should be competent swimmers before surfing: 50 metres confident open water swimming minimum.
