Gerupuk Bay is a 15-minute ride from Kuta Lombok and contains seven surf breaks in a single protected bay, all accessed by boat. This is one of DHM Surf Camp’s home base for sessions, and understanding what each break offers is the key to picking the right spot for your level on any given day.
Gerupuk is just one of several exceptional surf destinations on Lombok’s south coast. Our Lombok Surf Spots guide maps all of them so you can plan your entire trip around which breaks suit your level.
Why Gerupuk Is Special
Most surf destinations have one or two breaks in proximity. Gerupuk has seven distinct setups within the same bay, ranging from gentle inside waves ideal for beginners to powerful outer reefs that challenge experienced surfers. The boat access means you arrive at the lineup fresh, conditions can be assessed before paddling out, and switching breaks mid-session is practical.
The Seven Breaks
Inside Gerupuk
The most beginner-friendly break in the bay. A gentle left-hander that breaks slowly over a relatively deep section of reef, giving beginners time to pop up and ride for several seconds. Works best on incoming tide with 2 to 4 foot swell. This is typically the first break DHM introduces intermediate beginners to after initial Selong Belanak sessions.
Kids Point
Even gentler than Inside, essentially a mellow reform that is ideal for absolute first-timers who want boat access rather than shore break. Very forgiving on small swells. Used primarily for children and highly nervous adult beginners.
Outside Gerupuk
A more powerful, hollow wave that breaks over a shallower section of reef. Suitable for intermediate-to-advanced surfers comfortable with reef breaks. Forms proper set waves with rideable faces of 3 to 8 feet. The left is longer and more forgiving; the right is shorter and punchier. Best on mid-tide with southwest swell.
Don-Don’s Right
A right-hander that breaks differently from Inside Gerupuk, slightly more walled and faster. Good for intermediate surfers looking to practise turns and speed generation. Less crowded than Outside on most days.
Bumbang
Located at the southern edge of the bay. A quality left that works on medium-to-large southwest swell. Less frequented than Inside or Outside. A good option when the main breaks are crowded.
A-Frame Peak
An occasionally firing peak that produces both left and right options. Very swell-dependent. Coaches at DHM know exactly when this spot is working, which is another advantage of the local knowledge built into the camp programme.
How to Get to Gerupuk from Kuta Lombok
Gerupuk village is 12km east of Kuta via a flat coastal road, which is 15 to 20 minutes by scooter or 20 to 25 minutes by car. From the village beach, local jukung operators charge approximately 50,000 to 100,000 IDR per person for boat hire to the breaks. DHM Surf Camp includes boat access in surf packages so guests are transported and supervised without needing to negotiate independently.
Best Time to Surf Gerupuk
Dry season from May to October produces the most powerful and consistent swell. Inside Gerupuk works nearly year-round. Outside Gerupuk is at its best from June through September when southwest groundswell reaches 4 to 8 feet.
