Indonesia Surf Camp: What a Week at DHM Actually Looks Like

You’ve probably already got a dozen tabs open for “Indonesia surf camp.” Most of them say the same stuff. Perfect waves, friendly instructors, good vibes: you’ve read it before. We’re DHM Surf Camp in Kuta Lombok. Instead of writing another one of those pages, we’ll just show you what a week here actually looks like. Day by day. So you know what you’re getting into before you book anything.

Why Lombok Over the More Obvious Spots

Bali gets most of the attention when people think about surfing in Indonesia, and fair enough, it earned that reputation. But Kuta Lombok, just a short hop away, has kept a lot of what made Bali’s surf scene appealing before it got quite so busy:

  • Reef breaks like Gerupuk, Seger and Mawi without the same crowds
  • A more relaxed pace on land, less traffic, fewer scooters everywhere you look
  • Waves that suit beginners through to more experienced surfers depending on the spot
  • Still close enough to Bali that people often combine both on one trip

A Jakarta Post feature on southern Lombok covers some of this well if you want an outside perspective on why the area’s become a proper surf destination in its own right.

About DHM Surf Camp

We’re run by Sari and Javi, based right in Kuta Lombok, and our coaches are local guys who grew up surfing these breaks, not instructors flown in for the season. Whether you’re picking up a board for the first time or trying to sharpen technique you already have, the coaching gets tailored to where you’re actually at rather than run as one generic group class.

A few things about how we work:

  • Two surf sessions most days, morning and afternoon
  • Small groups so you’re actually getting feedback, not just watching from the beach
  • Photo and video analysis so you can see your own progress rather than take our word for it
  • Flexible start dates, you don’t need to wait for a fixed camp start day

We also work with Bali Monkey Rescue, a foundation focused on stopping wildlife trafficking, and we donate monthly for every guest who books a package with us. Booking a surf trip and supporting that cause aren’t mutually exclusive, which is honestly part of why we set it up that way.

What’s Included

  • Comfortable accommodation close to the beach
  • Two surf lessons a day with local, certified coaches
  • Breakfast and lunch
  • Daily transport to the best spots around Lombok
  • Video and photo analysis of your sessions
  • Airport transfer
  • WiFi and air conditioning
  • Community activities, sunset hangs, beach BBQs, that sort of thing

If there’s something specific you need that isn’t listed, just ask; most requests are easy enough to accommodate.

A Typical Day and Week

Morning: Breakfast, a briefing with your coach, checking conditions, then heading out for the first session.

Midday: Lunch, a break, time to nap or explore the island if you’re not too wiped out from the morning session.

Afternoon: Second lesson or coaching session, back in the water building on what you worked on that morning.

Evening: Photo and video review, feedback from your coach, and either a BBQ dinner or free time with everyone else at the camp.

Across a full week, the structure loosens a bit toward the middle with photo analysis days and some free time, and picks back up with focused technique work before a BBQ weekend to close things out. Yoga and stretching sessions get worked in too, which matters more than people expect once the muscle soreness from actual surfing kicks in.

Who This Is Actually For

  • Complete beginners who’ve never stood on a board
  • Intermediate surfers looking to clean up technique with proper coaching
  • Solo travellers; the camp’s central location makes it easy to meet people
  • Couples or small groups wanting a base with flexible surf add-ons
  • Digital nomads during low season who want WiFi and a quiet base with surfing optional

If you’re already surfing at a high level chasing serious barrels, this is still worth a look, but our sweet spot is genuinely beginner through intermediate progression.

Where We’re Based

  • Jalan Raya Pantai Kuta, Pujut, Nusa Tenggara Barat, 83573
  • Central Kuta Lombok location, close to shops and nightlife
  • Reachable from Bali by fast boat or flight, and we can help arrange the logistics if you’re combining both

Questions We Get Asked a Lot

What’s the best surf camp in Indonesia for beginners?

Can’t speak for every camp out there, but we built ours specifically around beginner and intermediate progression, small groups, proper coaching, and two sessions a day so you’re actually improving rather than just floating around.

Is Lombok or Bali better for a surf trip?

Depends what you’re after. Bali’s got more infrastructure and nightlife; Lombok’s quieter with less crowded breaks. A lot of guests do both, and we can help arrange the transfer between the two.

Do I need surf experience before booking a package?

No. Our Easy Surf package is built for people who’ve genuinely never surfed before. Coaches adjust the lesson to wherever you’re actually starting from.

What should I pack for an Indonesia surf camp?

Not much. Swimwear, sunscreen and a decent attitude cover most of it; we provide the equipment. Some guests bring their own wax or rash guard, but it’s not essential.

How do I get from Bali to Lombok?

Fast boat or flight, both are straightforward. We handle the logistics if you’re combining a Bali and Lombok trip into one.

Can I extend my stay after my package ends?

Yes, you can book a second package or just add extra days. Worth asking us directly about discounts for extending while you’re already here.

Is DHM suitable for solo travellers?

Very much so. The central Kuta Lombok location and small group setup make it easy to meet other guests, and quite a few people book solo specifically for that reason.

Do you offer discounts for groups or returning guests?

Yes, we do group discounts, couple discounts, and special rates for guests who’ve stayed with us before. Worth reaching out directly for specifics.
