Surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok? Which Surf Trip Is Right for You

Every winter, guests from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK send us some version of the same WhatsApp: “Fuerteventura or Lombok? We can’t decide.”

Fair enough. We’d struggle too.

We run our surf camp in Lombok, so we’re hardly neutral. But there are times we’d point a friend to the Canaries instead, and we’ll tell you when.

Surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok: the quick answer

Go for Fuerteventura if:

  • you live in Europe and only have a week
  • your trip falls between November and February
  • a wetsuit doesn’t bother you

Go for Lombok if:

  • you can get away for ten days or more
  • you’d rather surf in boardshorts
  • you want quieter lineups and cheaper days on the ground
Aspect Fuerteventura Lombok
Where Canary Islands, Spain South coast, Lombok, Indonesia
Water 18–23 °C 27–29 °C
Wetsuit 3/2 or 4/3 mm Not needed
Best surf October to March May to October
From Central Europe 4–5 hrs, direct 18–24 hrs, with stops
Main spots Corralejo, El Cotillo, North Shore, Lobos Selong Belanak, Gerupuk, Seger, Mawi

These are rough figures. Check a forecast before you book.

Why choose a surf camp in Fuerteventura?

Fuerteventura gets called the Hawaii of Europe. It’s not Hawaii. But it sits about 100 km off Africa and soaks up Atlantic swell on its north and west coasts, so there’s usually a wave somewhere.

Fuerteventura surf camp highlights

  • It’s close. Direct flights from Düsseldorf, Amsterdam or London take four to five hours. Land in the morning, surf after lunch.
  • Winter swell. October to March is prime time, which is exactly when Europe turns grey.
  • Plenty of choice. Corralejo has the surf schools and beginner beaches. El Cotillo is quieter. The North Shore reefs suit intermediates, and Lobos has a long right for experienced surfers.

Things to know before booking a surf camp in Fuerteventura

  • The water is cooler than the photos suggest: about 18 °C in late winter, 22–23 °C by September. You’ll need a wetsuit.
  • Summer trade winds can blow the north coast out.
  • Corralejo’s beginner beaches get crowded in peak season.

Why choose a surf camp in Lombok?

Lombok’s only a short hop from Bali, but it feels like a different island in every way. Forget beach clubs and traffic jams. Down south it’s mostly quiet bays, rocky headlands and fishing boats, and when swell arrives from the Indian Ocean, it lines up beautifully.

Surfers who knew Bali in the 90s often tell us it feels familiar. We take that as a compliment.

Lombok surf camp highlights

  • Warm water. Around 27–29 °C all year. No wetsuit, no shivering between sessions. Beginners relax, and relaxed beginners learn faster.
  • A wave for every level. First-timers usually start at Selong Belanak, where the beach break is soft and sandy. Gerupuk Bay has a bit of everything. Once you can turn, we’ll take you to Seger or Mawi.
  • Paddle out here and you’ll notice it straight away: fewer people. Compared with Bali or Corralejo, you’re not fighting for every wave.

Things to know before booking a surf camp in Lombok

  • Getting here isn’t quick. From Europe, it’s a full day of travel with a stop in Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur, so honestly, don’t come for less than ten days.
  • The best season is May to October. The wet season still has waves, but expect afternoon rain and fickle wind.

Fuerteventura vs Lombok surf: side-by-side comparison

Waves: Both are good. Fuerteventura’s swell hits harder and colder over sand and volcanic reef, while Lombok’s bays soften it. Experienced surfers won’t go wrong either way. Beginners usually do better in Lombok.

Water: Wetsuit in Fuerteventura for most of the year, none in Lombok. Not close.

Seasons: Handily, the two islands shine at opposite times of year. The Canaries are best through the European winter, Lombok through the summer. Your holiday dates might make the choice for you.

Travel: Fuerteventura, easily. Lombok means a long day of flights and a six- to eight-hour time jump.

Cost: Flights to the Canaries are cheaper. But a nasi campur lunch in Lombok costs a couple of euros and scooter hire only a few more, so over two weeks Lombok usually works out cheaper.

Vibe: After a surf in Fuerteventura, you’ll probably be eating tapas in a whitewashed Spanish town. In Lombok, it’s more likely a fresh coconut on the beach, with rice paddies inland and nobody in a hurry.

Surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok: which should you choose?

If you are… Choose Why
A European with one week off between November and February Fuerteventura Short flight, peak winter swell, no jet lag
A complete beginner who hates cold water Lombok Warm water and sheltered bays help you learn faster
Planning 10 days or more Lombok The long flight pays off, and daily costs are lower
Travelling between May and October Lombok Dry season, offshore winds and consistent swell
An intermediate surfer wanting to progress quickly Lombok Uncrowded waves mean more rides per session
Wanting surf plus a European city-break feel Fuerteventura Spanish culture, easy logistics, familiar comforts
A digital nomad or long-stay traveller Lombok Low living costs and a relaxed base in Kuta Lombok

Plenty of our guests do both. A winter week in the Canaries keeps them sharp, then a longer summer trip to Lombok is where they really level up.

Surfcamp Fuerteventura vs Lombok: FAQs

Is a surfcamp in Fuerteventura good for beginners?

Very much so. The sandy beaches around Corralejo and El Cotillo are forgiving, and there are schools everywhere. The catch? The Atlantic’s chilly, so pack a wetsuit.

What is the best time for a surf camp in Fuerteventura?

If you want real swell, aim for October to March. Summer still works for beginners, though the waves get smaller and the afternoon wind can be relentless.

Is a surf camp in Lombok better for learning to surf?

We’d say so, but we’re biased! Warm water and sheltered bays genuinely help. That said, if you’ve only got a week off in Europe, Fuerteventura is easier.

Do I need a wetsuit at a Lombok surf camp?

Not at all. The sea hovers around 27 to 29 °C, so boardshorts or a bikini will do. A rash guard is still worth packing for the sun.

How long should a surf camp trip be?

A week is enough to get you standing up and riding whitewater. If you want to catch green waves on your own, give it ten days to two weeks.

Can I combine a Bali and Lombok surf trip?

Easily. It’s a short flight or a couple of hours on a fast boat. Lots of guests spend a few days in Bali first, then come over to us.

Final thoughts: surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok?

There’s no wrong answer here, just a better fit for your dates.

If you’ve got a week in winter and want to stay close to home, a surf camp in Fuerteventura is hard to beat. If you can stretch to ten days or more and want warm water and room to progress, Lombok is where we’d send you, and not just because we live here.

Still on the fence? Send us your dates on WhatsApp, and we’ll give you an honest answer, even if it’s Fuerteventura.

Amazing team, so warm and welcoming. Food was so good and so fresh. Rooms were lovely. Surf coaches were super. Also really great to be situated just beyond the craziness of the main strip in town.

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉

This place is unbelievable. I came here as a Aussie on my own for a seven day stay and it really did exceed expectations on every level. All of the staff are great, always A great vibe and so happy to help. Afvila Is amazing and very friendly she helped me learn some Indonesian and took care of everything for me from day one. My surf Coach was Khay, He helped me improve so much over the trip. He takes his job very seriously and make sure to get you on plenty of waves with some form of instruction after every wave. super happy with his coaching and my progression over the course of my stay. Special mention to Pian He’s just the greatest vibe. He put me onto a few really good waves as well And never failed to have a smile on his face, absolute superstar. You’d be doing very well to get either of these guys as your coach. They are super knowledgeable and passionate about helping you to improve. My room was cleaned immaculately every single day. There’s always someone around Should you need anything and The food is exceptional. they really do cater to anything that you need. This is no ordinary hotel I will definitely be Back and recommend to all of my friends and family. Thank you very much to the whole team at DHM. I already can’t wait for my next trip.
