Every winter, guests from Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK send us some version of the same WhatsApp: “Fuerteventura or Lombok? We can’t decide.”
Fair enough. We’d struggle too.
We run our surf camp in Lombok, so we’re hardly neutral. But there are times we’d point a friend to the Canaries instead, and we’ll tell you when.

Why choose a surf camp in Fuerteventura?
Fuerteventura gets called the Hawaii of Europe. It’s not Hawaii. But it sits about 100 km off Africa and soaks up Atlantic swell on its north and west coasts, so there’s usually a wave somewhere.
Fuerteventura surf camp highlights
- It’s close. Direct flights from Düsseldorf, Amsterdam or London take four to five hours. Land in the morning, surf after lunch.
- Winter swell. October to March is prime time, which is exactly when Europe turns grey.
- Plenty of choice. Corralejo has the surf schools and beginner beaches. El Cotillo is quieter. The North Shore reefs suit intermediates, and Lobos has a long right for experienced surfers.
Things to know before booking a surf camp in Fuerteventura
- The water is cooler than the photos suggest: about 18 °C in late winter, 22–23 °C by September. You’ll need a wetsuit.
- Summer trade winds can blow the north coast out.
- Corralejo’s beginner beaches get crowded in peak season.
Why choose a surf camp in Lombok?
Lombok’s only a short hop from Bali, but it feels like a different island in every way. Forget beach clubs and traffic jams. Down south it’s mostly quiet bays, rocky headlands and fishing boats, and when swell arrives from the Indian Ocean, it lines up beautifully.
Surfers who knew Bali in the 90s often tell us it feels familiar. We take that as a compliment.
Lombok surf camp highlights
- Warm water. Around 27–29 °C all year. No wetsuit, no shivering between sessions. Beginners relax, and relaxed beginners learn faster.
- A wave for every level. First-timers usually start at Selong Belanak, where the beach break is soft and sandy. Gerupuk Bay has a bit of everything. Once you can turn, we’ll take you to Seger or Mawi.
- Paddle out here and you’ll notice it straight away: fewer people. Compared with Bali or Corralejo, you’re not fighting for every wave.
Things to know before booking a surf camp in Lombok
- Getting here isn’t quick. From Europe, it’s a full day of travel with a stop in Bali, Jakarta, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur, so honestly, don’t come for less than ten days.
- The best season is May to October. The wet season still has waves, but expect afternoon rain and fickle wind.
Fuerteventura vs Lombok surf: side-by-side comparison
Waves: Both are good. Fuerteventura’s swell hits harder and colder over sand and volcanic reef, while Lombok’s bays soften it. Experienced surfers won’t go wrong either way. Beginners usually do better in Lombok.
Water: Wetsuit in Fuerteventura for most of the year, none in Lombok. Not close.
Seasons: Handily, the two islands shine at opposite times of year. The Canaries are best through the European winter, Lombok through the summer. Your holiday dates might make the choice for you.
Travel: Fuerteventura, easily. Lombok means a long day of flights and a six- to eight-hour time jump.
Cost: Flights to the Canaries are cheaper. But a nasi campur lunch in Lombok costs a couple of euros and scooter hire only a few more, so over two weeks Lombok usually works out cheaper.
Vibe: After a surf in Fuerteventura, you’ll probably be eating tapas in a whitewashed Spanish town. In Lombok, it’s more likely a fresh coconut on the beach, with rice paddies inland and nobody in a hurry.
Surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok: which should you choose?
| If you are… | Choose | Why |
| A European with one week off between November and February | Fuerteventura | Short flight, peak winter swell, no jet lag |
| A complete beginner who hates cold water | Lombok | Warm water and sheltered bays help you learn faster |
| Planning 10 days or more | Lombok | The long flight pays off, and daily costs are lower |
| Travelling between May and October | Lombok | Dry season, offshore winds and consistent swell |
| An intermediate surfer wanting to progress quickly | Lombok | Uncrowded waves mean more rides per session |
| Wanting surf plus a European city-break feel | Fuerteventura | Spanish culture, easy logistics, familiar comforts |
| A digital nomad or long-stay traveller | Lombok | Low living costs and a relaxed base in Kuta Lombok |
Plenty of our guests do both. A winter week in the Canaries keeps them sharp, then a longer summer trip to Lombok is where they really level up.

Surfcamp Fuerteventura vs Lombok: FAQs
Is a surfcamp in Fuerteventura good for beginners?
Very much so. The sandy beaches around Corralejo and El Cotillo are forgiving, and there are schools everywhere. The catch? The Atlantic’s chilly, so pack a wetsuit.
What is the best time for a surf camp in Fuerteventura?
If you want real swell, aim for October to March. Summer still works for beginners, though the waves get smaller and the afternoon wind can be relentless.
Is a surf camp in Lombok better for learning to surf?
We’d say so, but we’re biased! Warm water and sheltered bays genuinely help. That said, if you’ve only got a week off in Europe, Fuerteventura is easier.
Do I need a wetsuit at a Lombok surf camp?
Not at all. The sea hovers around 27 to 29 °C, so boardshorts or a bikini will do. A rash guard is still worth packing for the sun.
How long should a surf camp trip be?
A week is enough to get you standing up and riding whitewater. If you want to catch green waves on your own, give it ten days to two weeks.
Can I combine a Bali and Lombok surf trip?
Easily. It’s a short flight or a couple of hours on a fast boat. Lots of guests spend a few days in Bali first, then come over to us.
Final thoughts: surfcamp Fuerteventura or Lombok?
There’s no wrong answer here, just a better fit for your dates.
If you’ve got a week in winter and want to stay close to home, a surf camp in Fuerteventura is hard to beat. If you can stretch to ten days or more and want warm water and room to progress, Lombok is where we’d send you, and not just because we live here.
Still on the fence? Send us your dates on WhatsApp, and we’ll give you an honest answer, even if it’s Fuerteventura.
