Lombok Surf Spots: How to Plan a Surf Trip Around Your Skill Level

A surf trip becomes easier when the waves match your capability. Choosing a break simply because it looks impressive can turn a good holiday into a difficult session. On the other hand, spending every day on waves below your level may leave you wishing for challenge. This is one reason Lombok surf spots attract surfers of all experience levels. South Lombok has a wide selection of breaks.

Don’t pick one famous wave and surf it every day. Instead, select based on your capacity.  It has to be based on the day’s conditions. You must also keep in mind the type of wave you are ready to handle.

Consider Your Expertise

Two surfers staying in the same place can have completely different itineraries. A first-time surfer needs forgiving waves. They need a manageable bottom and enough space to practise basic movements. An intermediate surfer may want steeper faces and longer rides. An advanced surfer may be searching for hollow reef waves and stronger swells.

Lombok makes this progression possible because several different types of breaks are within reach of Kuta and the south coast. This means your surf plan can change from one day to the next instead of being tied to a single beach. Before choosing a spot, consider four things:

  • Your current surfing ability
  • The type of bottom at the break
  • Tide and swell conditions
  • Travel time and access

These factors are more useful than simply asking which is the “best” spot.

Beginner Surfers: Start With Forgiving Waves

If you are learning to stand on a board, your first priority should be control rather than wave size.

Selong Belanak

This is one of the strongest choices for first-time surfers in Lombok. It is a long sandy beach break around 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok. The lack of reef makes it more forgiving for beginners who are still learning. It works throughout the year and is generally better around high tide.

This makes this spot a useful starting point for the first few sessions of a trip. You can spend time learning to position your board and stand consistently before moving towards more demanding conditions. The beach also gives non-surfing travel companions something to enjoy. Swimming and local food can turn a session into a full beach day.

Gerupuk Inside

Once you feel comfortable with your basic technique, this spot can provide a natural next step. Gerupuk Bay contains several different breaks, with the inside areas offering friendlier waves. The outer breaks provide more demanding conditions. Access to the breaks is by boat, which is part of the experience.

For a beginner, the benefit is the variety. You are not necessarily committed to one wave type. A local coach can assess the conditions and select a suitable break.

Tanjung Aan

This is another option for beginner and intermediate surfers. The break sits in the middle of the bay and has a reef bottom, with waves breaking left and right. DHM recommends mid to high tide. This is because the reef becomes quite shallow as the tide drops.

It is therefore different from Selong Belanak. While the waves may suit developing surfers, you still need to understand the reef environment. For newer surfers, this is where local guidance becomes particularly useful.

Intermediate Surfers: Look for More Challenging Lombok Surf Spots

They have a wider choice, but it covers a large range of ability. Someone who can confidently catch unbroken waves may still not be ready for a shallow reef with a strong current. Before choosing a demanding spot, think about your paddle fitness and positioning. Also think about the ability to read sets and comfort in deeper water.

Mawi

This is one of the main names among Lombok surf spots for intermediate and advanced surfers. DHM experts describe it as an A-frame reef break with a left and a right. The left can offer longer walls. The right can be shorter and hollower. The break can handle different swell sizes. But bigger conditions demand greater experience.

The reef is an important part of the equation. Mawi is not simply a bigger version of a beginner beach break. If you are moving from beginner-level waves to more technical surfing, this spot can be a useful progression target when conditions are appropriate.

DHM places Mawi after breaks such as Selong Belanak and Gerupuk in a typical progression.

Seger Beach

This is another option for surfers moving into intermediate territory. Its proximity to Kuta makes it convenient. But the wave environment still requires attention to conditions and the reef. A nearby break is not necessarily an easier break. Convenience should never replace a realistic assessment of your ability.

Air Guling

This is another south-coast option for intermediate to advanced surfers. Its point-break characteristics give experienced surfers a different type of wave from the beach breaks used by beginners. If you have started working on turns and positioning, adding a point break to your trip can give your surfing a new challenge.

Advanced Surfers: Choose the Wave, Not the Reputation

These people may arrive in Lombok with a specific goal. Perhaps they want a powerful reef wave. Some may want a long left or a barrel. Even then, reputation should not be the only deciding factor. A famous wave can be unsuitable on the wrong day. Tide and wind can change the character of a break significantly. The swell direction and wave size can also have an impact.

Ekas

This is interesting because the area contains two very different surf zones. Ekas Inside is a mellow wave suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. Ekas Outside provides a steeper and more hollow experience for stronger surfers. DHM describes Ekas as a location suitable for surfers across different levels because of this variation.

The journey is longer than some of the breaks close to Kuta. The drive from Kuta is around two hours. There is a boat option from Awang that can reduce the road journey. For an experienced surfer, the travel can be worthwhile when the conditions line up.

Desert Point

This is a completely different proposition. Located on Lombok’s southwest peninsula, it is known for a long, hollow left-hand barrel. DHM recommends it only for advanced and professional surfers. This is because of the shallow reef and demanding wave.

It is also not a wave you should add to your itinerary simply because you want to surf a famous location. Desert Point requires the right skill set and suitable conditions. If you are still developing confidence in powerful waves, there are better places to spend your surf days.

Use Tide Conditions to Build Your Schedule

Your skill level tells you which breaks to consider. Tide helps determine when to surf them. This is particularly relevant around Lombok’s reef breaks. Different spots respond differently as the water level changes.

Selong Belanak generally works best around high tide. Tanjung Aan and Mawi are suited to mid to high tide. Desert Point can require lower tide conditions for its characteristic shape. This means you should not build your itinerary around fixed times such as “surf every morning at 8am”.

Instead, check the forecast and tide before deciding where to go. A good surf camp can make this process easier. This is because coaches who know the local breaks can match the session to the day’s conditions.

Plan Around the Swell Too

Tide is only one part of the picture. Swell direction and wind influence the waves you see at different breaks. A spot that looked ideal in a guidebook may not be the right choice when you arrive. This is particularly relevant when moving from beach breaks to reef breaks.

Consider Travel Time Between Breaks

Another useful part of planning Lombok surf spots is understanding the geography. Several breaks are relatively close to Kuta. But others require a longer drive, and some need boat transfer. DHM’s overview places Tanjung Aan around 20 minutes east of Kuta. Mawi is around 25 minutes west. Desert Point is around three hours away. Ekas is also a longer journey, although a boat transfer can shorten the road section.

If you surfed hard the previous afternoon, spending several hours travelling for an advanced session may not be the smartest plan.

A Sample Seven-Day Surf Plan

Your itinerary should remain flexible, but a rough structure can help.

Day  Suggested focus Suitable level
Day 1 Selong Belanak Beginner to intermediate
Day 2  Gerupuk Inside Beginner to intermediate
Day 3 Tanjung Aan or suitable Gerupuk break Beginner to intermediate
Day 4  Rest or technique session All levels
Day 5 Mawi or another suitable intermediate break  Intermediate to advanced
Day 6 Ekas or another condition-dependent break Varies
Day 7  Return to the break that best matches conditions All levels

This is only an example. Your actual schedule should depend on conditions and your ability on the day.

Local Knowledge Can Help

Reading the instructions before your holiday is useful. But local knowledge is important. A local coach knows that two beaches can behave very differently on the same day. They also know access routes and tide windows. They know which break may suit your current ability.

DHM coaches are local and certified. Our surf packages include daily transport to surf spots around Lombok. Our current programmes also include coaching and photo and video analysis. We have surf sessions planned around conditions.

That can be particularly helpful if you are unfamiliar with reef breaks.

Use Video Feedback to Choose Your Next Challenge

Progress is easier to judge when you can see your own surfing. You may feel ready for a faster wave. But video can show whether your stance and take-off technique are ready for that step. DHM has photo and video analysis. Coaches can use session footage to identify areas that need work and discuss what to focus on next.

This makes the next surf session more purposeful.

Do Not Confuse Bigger Waves With Better Surfing

One common mistake on a surf holiday is treating wave size as the main measure of progress.

It is not.

A smaller wave can give you several clean rides. It can let you work on your bottom turn. This may be more valuable than a larger wave where you spend the entire session struggling. The right wave is the one that challenges you without placing you outside your ability. This approach is particularly relevant in Lombok. This is because the island has such a broad range of wave types.

Case Study

Consider Daniel, an intermediate surfer visiting Lombok for seven days. He can consistently catch green waves and perform basic turns. But he has limited experience on shallow reef. Instead of booking Mawi and Desert Point for consecutive days, he starts at Gerupuk and spends time working on positioning. His coach then considers Mawi once his paddling and wave selection look ready.

After a stronger Mawi session, Daniel takes a lighter day rather than immediately chasing another demanding wave. Later in the week, conditions make Ekas a suitable option. He gets another chance to work on turns without treating every session as a test.

This way he gets variety, and he keeps the trip connected to his actual capability.

Final Thoughts

The best way to experience Lombok surf spots is to match your destination to your capability. You must not just go after the most famous wave. Beginners can start with the forgiving beach break at Selong Belanak. They can then progress towards suitable areas of Gerupuk and Tanjung Aan. Intermediate surfers can consider Mawi, and Seger. They can choose Air Guling and suitable sections of Ekas as their skills develop. Advanced surfers may have the experience needed for demanding breaks such as Mawi’s stronger conditions. They can even go for Ekas Outside and Desert Point.

Keep your itinerary flexible. Check tide and swell conditions. Consider travel time and listen to local coaching advice. Most importantly, choose waves that help you enjoy surfing and improve your skills. Lombok gives you enough variety to do exactly that.

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉
