Lombok Indonesia Surf: Why This Island Belongs on Every Surfer’s List

Plenty of surfers who’ve spent time in Southeast Asia will tell you the same thing about Lombok: they wish they’d gone earlier. It’s a short hop from Bali, but land there, and things feel different. Lineups thin out, life on shore slows down, and the waves along the south coast hold their own against anything Bali is known for.

At DHM Surf Camp in Kuta Lombok, guests want one answer above all: where should I be surfing? Below is that answer, spot by spot, along with what makes the island worth the trip and how to plan a Lombok surf trip around your ability.

What Makes Surfing In Lombok Different

Everyone talks about Bali. Fewer talk about how much space Lombok still offers. Reef breaks and beach breaks run along the south coast close enough together that switching spots rarely means a long drive, and most days you’ll paddle out to a far emptier lineup than a similar wave in Bali.

The water barely cools off, the tropical climate holds steady, and swell keeps rolling through for months, whether you’re there during dry season from May to October or the wetter window between November and April. Pulling up a Lombok swell forecast before you fly out gives you a starting point, but the real edge comes from knowing which break works on a given day. That’s why a surf camp in Lombok makes sense for most people: guides who surf these breaks daily put you on the right wave instead of leaving it to a guess.

The Best Lombok Surf Spots To Know

Selong Belanak Beach

Some of the softest waves on the island break here, over sand instead of reef, which is why so many people take their first surf lesson at Selong Belanak. It sits about half an hour outside Kuta. Go at high tide if you can, and don’t rush off after; the beach is lined with warungs worth sitting at for a while.

Tanjung Aan

A reef break sits parked in the middle of one of Lombok’s prettier bays here, a 20-minute drive east of Kuta. Paddling out takes about 10 minutes, or a boat runs you there for roughly Rp 50,000. Most days suit beginners and intermediates fine, though a solid swell can turn it into something more serious. Low tide exposes the reef fast, so plan around mid to high tide instead.

Gerupuk Bay

Four different waves live inside this bay, none reachable except by boat. Fishermen charge roughly Rp 50,000 a head, three riders minimum per trip.

Don Don sits closest to the harbor and needs a swell in the 5 to 7 foot range before it does much. Once working, it’s an easy A-frame that beginners and intermediates like. Kiddies asks for more size, closer to 7 or 8 feet, but rewards patience with an occasional clean barrel.

Gerupuk Inside is probably the friendliest of the four, long and soft enough that surf schools practically camp there, crowded but great for working on turns. Gerupuk Outside is the outlier: fast, hollow, breaking over an outer reef, and not really a place for anyone still finding their feet.

Air Guling

A right-hand point ranking among the better rights in south Lombok breaks in this quieter bay, 15 minutes west of Kuta, alongside a steeper left next door. You’ll need a boat or a paddle out either way, same Rp 50,000 fee. When swell picks up, both waves get genuinely powerful, with a strong current running through, especially on the left. Wet season generally shows this spot at its best.

Seger Beach

Local surfers from Kuta treat Seger as home turf, home to the Bau Nyale festival and local contests each year. A scooter ride gets you there easily. The wave holds up under smaller swells, up to about 5 feet before it closes out, preferring calm wind on a mid to high tide. A punchier right suits confident surfers, while a softer left works for those still building skills.

Mawi

Ask anyone who’s spent real time surfing Lombok surf spots, and Mawi comes up almost without fail. Dry season is when it fires most reliably, holding anywhere from 6 feet up to a genuine 10.

The last stretch down means rough dirt road, and the wave itself doesn’t forgive much either, an A-frame that can spit a quick barrel on the right before the reef turns shallow fast underneath. Intermediate and advanced surfers do best here, especially at mid to high tide, though things ease up once the tide fills in more.

Ekas

Two separate waves share this one bay, a short boat ride from Awang harbor. Ekas Inside stays soft and workable across most tides, a decent option for beginners and intermediates wanting a long wall to practice on. Ekas Outside is the tougher sibling, breaking harder along a cliff face, particularly when a south-east swell hits at high tide, built for surfers looking to push a bit further.

Desert Point

Travelling surfers talk about Desert Point the way climbers talk about certain peaks. It’s regarded as one of the best left-hand barrels in the world, and under the right swell it can hold a barrel for close to 20 seconds. The catch is that it’s wildly inconsistent, only really turning on during bigger groundswells at low tide, and the reef sitting just beneath the surface means this one stays in advanced and pro territory only.

Choosing The Right Lombok Surf Camp For Your Level

Considering how much these waves vary, most people find it worth booking a structured surf camp in Lombok rather than piecing a trip together alone. Coaching at DHM matches your level, and the day’s spot is picked based on real conditions.

Here’s how the packages line up:

  • Easy Surf, 4 Days / 5 Nights: Seven coached sessions, private deluxe accommodation with breakfast and a second meal, airport transfers, and photo analysis. Fits short trips with real progress.
  • Addict Surf, 6 Days / 7 Nights: Ten sessions, dedicated coaching, video analysis, yoga, and surf training. Most solo travellers and couples choose this one.
  • Intense Surf, 9 Days / 10 Nights: Fifteen sessions weighted toward technique over volume, plus recovery sessions and yoga.
  • Two Weeks Package, 12 Days / 14 Nights: Twenty sessions with a rest day built in, for surfers after lasting improvement rather than a quick holiday.

Every package covers airport transfers, board insurance and surf gear, and private accommodation, leaving only the length of your stay to figure out.

FAQs

Is Lombok good for beginner surfers?

Yes. Selong Belanak, Ekas Inside, and Gerupuk Inside offer soft waves suited to first-timers, and a surf camp in Lombok helps match beginners to the right break daily.

What is the best time of year for a Lombok surf trip?

May to October is peak season, when Mawi and Desert Point are most consistent. November through April still brings solid surf, especially at Air Guling and Seger Beach.

Do I need to be an advanced surfer to visit Lombok?

No. Lombok surf spots cover every level, from gentle beach breaks for beginners to demanding reef passes like Desert Point built for advanced surfers.

How do I reach the breaks at Gerupuk and Ekas?

Both require a boat, with fishermen running transport for a small per-person fee and a minimum rider count.

What’s included in a DHM Surf Camp package?

Every package includes private deluxe accommodation, airport transfers, surf gear and board insurance, and dedicated coaching, from Easy Surf up to the Two Weeks Package.

Is Lombok less crowded than Bali for surfing?

Mostly yes. Spots like Gerupuk Inside can get busy, but many Lombok surf spots see far fewer surfers than comparable breaks in Bali.

Planning Your Lombok Surf Trip

May through October marks peak season, when Mawi and Desert Point hit their most dependable form. The wetter months still deliver, with Air Guling and Seger Beach coming alive on wet season swell and often fewer people around.

Whatever season you land in, quieter water, real variety between breaks, and a coastline still a step behind Bali in crowds keep surfers coming back to Lombok. Frequently Asked Questions About Surfing In Lombok

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉

This place is unbelievable. I came here as a Aussie on my own for a seven day stay and it really did exceed expectations on every level. All of the staff are great, always A great vibe and so happy to help. Afvila Is amazing and very friendly she helped me learn some Indonesian and took care of everything for me from day one. My surf Coach was Khay, He helped me improve so much over the trip. He takes his job very seriously and make sure to get you on plenty of waves with some form of instruction after every wave. super happy with his coaching and my progression over the course of my stay. Special mention to Pian He’s just the greatest vibe. He put me onto a few really good waves as well And never failed to have a smile on his face, absolute superstar. You’d be doing very well to get either of these guys as your coach. They are super knowledgeable and passionate about helping you to improve. My room was cleaned immaculately every single day. There’s always someone around Should you need anything and The food is exceptional. they really do cater to anything that you need. This is no ordinary hotel I will definitely be Back and recommend to all of my friends and family. Thank you very much to the whole team at DHM. I already can’t wait for my next trip.

The coaching was personal, the video analysis was genuinely useful, transport to the surf spots was well organised and the accommodation looked exactly like the photos. I came mainly for the beginner surfing lessons, but left feeling much more confident in the water. If you’re searching for a surf camp near me in Lombok, this is definitely worth considering.
