Every Surfer Should Know About Surf Spots in Lombok

Many people visit Indonesia each year, and many of them travel for surfing. Lombok continues to attract surfers. This is because it has clean beaches and waves for every skill level. Many visitors arrive with high hopes but little local knowledge. A small amount of planning and details about Surf Spots in Lombok can help.

In this blog, we will share five important facts that every rider should know before entering the water.

1. Every Surf Break Suits a Different Skill Level

Many first-time visitors think every beach in this place offers similar waves. That idea leads to disappointment and even injury. Every surf break has its own character. Selong Belanak gives beginners a gentle start. Soft sandy bottoms and slow waves help new surfers build confidence. Many schools choose this beach. This is because students can practise safely and also enjoy clear water.

Tanjung Aan suits beginners and intermediate surfers. The reef sits below the waves. But the take-off remains friendly during the right tide. Boat access also makes the trip simple.

More experienced surfers often visit Mawi and Desert Point.

These breaks demand strong paddling. You also need quick decisions and the best board control. Reef bottoms and powerful waves leave very little room for mistakes.

One guest arrived at DHM Surf Camp after several months of surfing beach breaks in Australia. He believed he could handle every wave. After one session at Mawi, he decided to spend two more days improving his technique before returning. That decision gave him a safer experience.

Choosing the right wave always leads to better progress.

2. Surf Spots in Lombok Change with the Seasons

The island produces good waves throughout the year. But conditions never stay the same.

The dry season usually runs from May until September. Offshore winds produce cleaner waves across many beaches in South Lombok. During these months, experienced surfers visit.

  • Mawi
  • Air Guling
  • Desert Point

The wet season is also good for surfing. Gerupuk Inside and Seger, and several sheltered breaks continue to produce fun rides. This is because the wind direction changes.

The table below will help you.

Season Typical Conditions Popular Areas Best For
Dry Season Clean offshore winds and steady swell Mawi, Air Guling, Desert Point Intermediate and advanced surfers
Wet Season Protected bays with reliable waves Gerupuk, Seger, Tanjung Aan Beginners and intermediate surfers

Local surf experts watch forecasts every day. This is because wave quality changes with

  • swell size
  • tide
  • wind direction

Even the best surfer enjoys a better session with good timing.

3. Tide Matters as Much as Wave Size

Many visitors only check wave height before entering the sea. Tide plays an even bigger role.

Some reefs become very shallow during low tide. Sharp coral can sit only a short distance below the surface. A small mistake may end the session early.

Several breaks perform much better during mid and high tide.

For example:

  • Selong Belanak usually works best during high tide
  • Gerupuk Inside performs well across several tide levels
  • Mawi becomes much safer during mid to high tide
  • Seger produces enjoyable waves when the tide rises

Experienced surfers also understand that patience matters. Waiting an extra hour for the right tide delivers much cleaner rides. It is better not to rush into poor conditions.

4. Respect Local Surf Etiquette and the Ocean

Every rider shares the same goal. Everyone wants a fun session with good waves and a safe return to the beach. Good manners in the water help everyone enjoy the experience.

Locals welcome visitors who show respect. A smile and patience go a long way. Good behaviour also reduces problems in busy line-ups.

Keep these points in mind.

  • Wait for your turn instead of chasing every wave
  • Watch other surfers before paddling into the line-up
  • Keep a safe distance from other boards.
  • Take any rubbish back with you.
  • Respect local customs and fishing boats near the beaches

Many guests at DHM Surf Camp say they enjoy the friendly atmosphere as much as the waves. They make new friends during a surf trip. This is because everyone shares the same respect for the ocean.

A local surf expert also adds extra value. They know which breaks suit the day’s conditions. They also know the safest paddle routes. They know the best entry points and the busiest sections of each break. This local knowledge saves time. It helps surfers enjoy more quality waves.

5. The Right Equipment Makes Every Session Better

Many people spend weeks planning flights and accommodation. But they pay little attention to their surf equipment. The right board makes a huge difference.

  • Beginners usually enjoy soft-top boards. This is because they give extra stability.
  • Intermediate surfers choose funboards and larger shortboards as their confidence grows.
  • Experienced surfers normally select high-performance boards that match the day’s swell.

Other items deserve equal attention.

  • Reef boots protect your feet on shallow coral
  • Reef-safe sunscreen protects your skin and the marine environment
  • A quality leash keeps your board close after every wipeout.
  • Plenty of water helps you stay hydrated in the tropical climate

Weather conditions can change during the day. A morning session may feel very different from an afternoon surf. Many riders check the latest forecast before leaving for the beach instead of relying on yesterday’s report.

A Simple Plan Before Every Surf Session

A few minutes of preparation lead to a much better day in the water.

Things To Do Before You Paddle Out Why It Matters
Check the swell forecast. Better wave selection
Check the tide time Safer entry and exit
Watch the line-up for a few minutes Better understanding of the waves
Pick the right board. Improved performance
Warm up your body Better movement and fewer injuries

These simple steps may look small. But they often separate an average session from an excellent one.

Final Thoughts

Lombok gives surfers an outstanding mix of

  • friendly beach breaks
  • exciting reef waves
  • beautiful scenery
  • warm tropical water

The best surf trips begin with

  • good planning
  • respect for local conditions
  • realistic choices based on experience

Remember these points before your next session

  • Pick a break that matches your ability
  • Check the tide and forecast before entering the water
  • Respect local surfers and the ocean

These simple habits can make every session safer and far more enjoyable.

What an incredible experience at DHM surf camp. The accommodation and home base in its entirety is stunning (looks so much better in person than the photos), nestled in a quiet part of Kuta but close enough to still have access to all of the best parts of the city too. The people who work there are incredible - nothing is too much to ask, they are all so friendly and more than happy to help in any way they can. The food is delicious, and the two meals a day are a great way to stay fueled for the two surfs a day. The surf coaches are incredible - not only highly skilled, but also just lovely and engaging people who are really focused on ensuring you both enjoy and improve with your surfing. They’re often the loudest and most encouraging coaches out in the waves, and create such a great atmosphere for everyone. You’ll get to know Lola (resident cat) and enjoy the yoga in an incredible location. I can’t wait to return to Kuta and will definitely be staying at DHM again 🏄

We spent 2 weeks at the DHM Surf Camp. The accommodation was top‑notch — we loved the clean and comfortable rooms with AC and appliances like a TV, fridge, and kettle. Every day we received fresh towels, refilled water bottles, and a thoroughly cleaned room and bathroom. And I mean really clean. There was also a swimming pool and several common areas for relaxing or eating, equipped with a pool table, books, refreshments, and music. There is also a working restaurant service with breakfast, dinner and snacks. The staff — both the accommodation team and the trainers — were VERY helpful, communicative, and genuinely caring about whether everything was okay during our stay. If you need anything they will magically make it happen. A big shout‑out to Javi, Pian and most of all Kai, our instructor, who had a constantly positive attitude, more patience than all of us combined, and always believed in us. He gave us great advice throughout the whole course. Surf students get an individual approach, photo analysis sessions, may participate in gym classes and yoga classes, which we highly recommend. DHM can make a surfer even from someone as hot-headed and wooden as me. All in all, we had an unforgettable time with DHM. We hope to come back there one day 😉

This place is unbelievable. I came here as a Aussie on my own for a seven day stay and it really did exceed expectations on every level. All of the staff are great, always A great vibe and so happy to help. Afvila Is amazing and very friendly she helped me learn some Indonesian and took care of everything for me from day one. My surf Coach was Khay, He helped me improve so much over the trip. He takes his job very seriously and make sure to get you on plenty of waves with some form of instruction after every wave. super happy with his coaching and my progression over the course of my stay. Special mention to Pian He’s just the greatest vibe. He put me onto a few really good waves as well And never failed to have a smile on his face, absolute superstar. You’d be doing very well to get either of these guys as your coach. They are super knowledgeable and passionate about helping you to improve. My room was cleaned immaculately every single day. There’s always someone around Should you need anything and The food is exceptional. they really do cater to anything that you need. This is no ordinary hotel I will definitely be Back and recommend to all of my friends and family. Thank you very much to the whole team at DHM. I already can’t wait for my next trip.
